Our mission
We are deeply motivated by Project Drawdown's research, which highlights silvopasture, grazing animals among trees, as highly effective for carbon capture and storage. Our goal is simple: model resilient farming that improves the land for future generations and feeds our community. Everything we do—from caring for animals and trees to designing low-carbon buildings—supports this mission.
The Farm
Nestled off-grid in the woods outside Bear River, our farm is a project in sustainable living. Our buildings are designed to have low-carbon footprints. We power everything with solar and designed the first (legal) branched-drain greywater system in Nova Scotia, where all the waste water from our sinks travels through underground to a series of fruit and nut trees.
Our pigs and sheep help transform overgrown pastures and young woods into a planned forest system filled with edible trees and bushes, creating a shared abundance for us all.
The Animals
Lamb
Our Katahdin sheep are a hardy hair breed known for mild, delicious flavor and excellent foraging ability. Raised on 100% grass with no antibiotics or hormones, our lambs live their entire lives on pasture with their families. We use rotational grazing to provide varied forage while naturally fertilizing the soil and keeping the animals healthy.
Pork
Our Mangalitsa pigs are a heritage breed famous for their wooly coats and beautifully marbled meat. Raised without antibiotics or hormones, they contribute to our farm's soil health.
The Farmers
Our farm is run by two young farmers from New Brunswick, Dominic and Drew. Dominic’s background is in ecological building; and Drew’s is in digital design.
We work the day-shift, while our brave companion, Kinga (the dog), works the night-shift.
How we got our name
The Mi'kmaq called this area L'sitkuk, (pronounced "elsetkook"), meaning "flowing along by high rocks." Our farm takes its name from the Acadian name that came next - Rivière Hébert. While historians aren't certain whether it was named after Simon Imbert or Louis Hébert, we chose the Hébert version because it's Drew's family name.
